PNP welcomes office for Opposition leader

    Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Deputy general secretary of the People's National Party (PNP), Julian Robinson, has commended the Bruce Golding-led administration for providing the leader of the opposition with an office from which to operate.

"It is a step in the right direction for governance in this country and for the country itself. An office will provide greater efficiency in discharging the duties of the leader of the opposition," he told the Observer.

Historically, the leader of the opposition has operated out of his respective party headquarters, but the Golding administration promised a designated office for the leader.

The office, located on West King's House Road in Kingston, will be toured by the media tomorrow afternoon.

"The Government should be commended because the leader of the opposition is a constitutional position and it is important that facilities be provided for the discharge of the responsibilities of the office," Robinson said yesterday.

"We [however] need to take it a step further and see how we can enable other public servants to discharge their responsibilities effectively," he said, citing the example that backbenchers in Parliament are forced to use personal resources to carry out their duties as public servants.
