Prime Minister Bruce Golding says the society has divested itself of the responsibility that is attached to bringing up children and transforming them into good citizens.
In chastising parents and care givers, Mr. Golding said the responsibility is not for teachers alone.
According to the Prime Minister, teachers are left with the difficult task of repairing minds that have been neglected, abused and misled, while at the same time preparing a curriculum.
Mr. Golding added that a partnership is critical in effectively educating our children.
His comments were made in the wake of increased reports of assault on young people.
He was speaking at the Jamaica Teachers' Associations' Berger Paints-sponsored Roll of Honour Award presentation ceremony for 2008 at the Hilton Kingston hotel on Thursday.
