Pier to be built in Falmouth Friday, 07 November 2008 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } A major contract is to be signed Friday for the construction of a cruise
    shipping pier in Falmouth, Trelawny.

The project, which is slated to cost US$263 million, will include the construction of a pier, terminal building, car park, retail shops and commercial buildings.

The venture is being financed jointly by the Port Authority of Jamaica and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines

Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry, says despite a few difficulties, the way is now clear for the project to get off the ground.

"Not the least of which is the present global financial position, but the investment
is going to take place ... the facilities of the development of the pier itself and the port, followed by the land side development, will be done by Royal Caribbean Cruise
... the rest I leave for the Prime Minister to announce today (Friday) and to address in the surge forward to create employment and a new vision
of development for the country," he said.

The new pier should be able to accommodate the Genesis Cruise Line which is now being built.

The liner will be able to carry more than 9,000 passengers and crew.

hopefully they can develop a few things in Falmouth so it will work out. Also various tours to Ochie etc.

I guess if the shipping company is on on this so it is very hopeful.

the shipping company is in on it so it seems to be a good move as the ships will come.

Well, shouldn't that trigger additional investments in the area then?

Good to see more progress on this project since the initial agreement some years ago.

The plan includes restoration of Falmouth's Georgian style buildings, redevelopment of the town and putting in adequate infrastructure and cultural/entertainment facilities.

Falmouth has a great history and a great infrastructure, mostly old, but good foundation. But much work still needs to be done to promote these. I think we need to concentrate on the restoration project and developing the cultural/entertainment facilities first before we go around building piers all around the island!

I think what happen is a few cruiseship companies want to operate their own pier. What it means for Jamaica is as long as they are sailing they will stop there. I hope the deal negociated is not a giveaway but will have money coming in the government's purse.

As you know however it is very political favorable to tell any seaside town that you going to build a pier for shop to come in. How much Pier them a go build? One in Hanover, Negril, Port Royal, and the one build by Tankweld in Trelawny plus Discovery Bay for Bauxite. Any more you know of?

I think this was planned before the JLP came to office...???
...but wasn't there a pause as the possible damage to the "Glistening Waters" coral reefs were assessed?

btw - Is the proposed site in the town? ...proper construction of security area and ways to alleviate congestion as growth occurs?

The "well ordered" piers I have seen have fairly large empty space areas and tight security...no congestion!

Wonder if we are just going to slap dun' di pier?
