  • Movado - Doors Closing?

Pardon the metaphor, but from where I’m sitting it surely seems like the doors are slowly closing against Movado (and Bounty Killer as well). Looking at these two members of the so-called Alliance, yesterday it was places like Guyana and St Vincent, today it’s the Bahamas, and tomorrow?

Movado asked not to enter The Bahamas

Advocacy group Bahamas Against Crime (BAC) got their way this weekend, when dancehall superstar Movado was denied entry into The Bahamas where he was slated to appear at the 8th annual Millennium Countdown Concert there. The four day major event started on October 30 and ended on the 2nd of November at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Center.

Earlier this month the group BAC sounded an alarm through a press release in which they pleaded with Bahamian media, government and the church to “take proper action” in what they spoke of as “an upcoming event that is poised to squander hard-earned gains in The Bahamas’ struggle to contain and reduce crime.” BAC pointed out that they took particular offence to Movado being on the bill, since, “his lyrics and persona glorify violence.” They also spoke of Movado’s songs as having sexually explicit lyrics.

The release said, "The last thing our people, especially our impressionable youth, should be exposed to are songs, dance, and simulated acts of murder, mayhem and the "gansta" lifestyle, projected and glorified by these influential individuals, in an environment of high energy lubricated by alcohol and drugs."

Promoters Sigma Management and Downsound Records combined their efforts to organize and stage the event in New Providence, with a completely different perception; as their only aim was to provide something for everyone, with the wide variety of stellar acts booked.

With the BAC utterly unaware of the positive implications of artists communicating the world’s realisms, be they sour or sweet; and the age old reality that dancehall dj’ing, rap and hip hop is documentary - they brought pressure to bear on authorities who sprung a surprise on Movado, his management and the show’s promoters as the DJ arrived in their country.

The event was promoted heavily overseas with the intention of attracting many international guests and tourists to The Bahamas. Promoter Frank Forbes of Sigma Management told The Nassau Guardian, “A key focus is that everyone must win from this major undertaking.”

Everyone but Mavado and his team that is, since they certainly lost their valuable time; as they could have been forewarned by Bahamian authorities before leaving Jamaica.

Others appearing over the weekend included: Keisha Cole, Morgan Heritage, Queen Ifrica, Tony Rebel, Jah Cure, Brian McKnight and Etana.

Tonight is the closing night and performers like: Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurking and Landlord will appear.

Shouldn't be just Movado. Alot of the dancehall stars need to start cleaning up their act. Bounty, Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Materon, Erup etc. Even the man dem that work the mike on the sound systems. Its as if they're getting from bad to worse.

The other day I started listening to 876radio and one of the DJs was explaining to the listeners that certain things he used to say can't be said anymore and he was apologizing for not being able to say it, I had to laff.

Saturday was talking with a DJ (selector) and when I told him that the DJs both on the sound systems and radio stations must take a stand against playing some of the slackness music, he pointed out to me its what the people want.

He had a point. As long as the fans crave the gangster music and the slack music the Movados will continue putting out what they're putting out.

good to see you coming around Lazie.

Yeah if the fan crave it but the biggest part of the puzzle is the lazie djs who have no imagination and don't give anything else a chance to be heard.

Coming around to what? I still don't think blaming the music for society's ills is valid. However, too much crap is being produced today.

It is not blaming it, it is a fact that there is too much negitative music and it contributes to our society, nothing positive.

Wasn't there negative music when we were growing up? Not as much as today, but ... did it cause us to be violent?

the negitive songs may have not cause you to to violent but it influence others.

I remember Lone ranger M16 which made some people take note of what a M16 is. I remember M. Palmer "lick shot" and others which developed fire shot inna dance culture instead of the usual forward.

If you listen some a the words of some of those older songs you will see the direct glorifying of real BAD MEN even by names.

Nowadays it is just too much and there is no counter been played in most dancehall market it is 80% negititve.

Listen Vegas "head's high" with a little imagination or a different mix it could have been a real positive song.

Lazie - there's a difference when you were growing up in that the entire village (it takes a village to raise a child) was concerned about your development; now a large % of these children have neither mother or father, nor the village.

yes after spreading negitivity for years people like Ninja Man, Vegas, and so many of them have to step forward and pretty much say sorry.

It is ironic that most of ninjaman's early hits were not GUN tunes and he could have had a long and prosperous career without guns and drugs.

... suh a nuh the DJs fault (alone), its society in general.
                      1. Those that guh have these kids that they know they're in no position to care for. Some of the girls may consider an abortion but is caught between a rock and a hard place.
                      2. Then there is the hypocritical organiztion called the church that hit out against abortion and at the same time offer no assistance or very little with these "unwanted kids" but now dem a ask fi bring back hanging.
                      3. The radio djs and TV VJs that continue bigging up some artistes who are putting out crap as hits.
                      4. The politicians who doesn't have the balls to insist that parents must be parents and promote family planning. I recall growing up there was an ad "Two is better than too many" What we have now?
Not defending the djs, but I think blaming them is simply throwing up smokescreens.

While I am for abortion rights, but the mentality that say man fi have "nuff gal", "Gal inna bungle" is worst. It is wrong when it comes out of "PJ" mouth and it is wrong when it comes out of "Beenie man" mouth. The fact that too many fathers are not looking after their kids and it is glorified by the microphone only makes it worst in our society as it is accepted as the thing to do.
