    He may lose his Chairmanship

Reid Leaning Toward Stripping Lieberman of Chairmanship

    By ANDREW MIGA
    Associated Press

    6:38 PM EST, November 6, 2008

Sen. Joe Lieberman's affiliation with Democrats was in question after a meeting Thursday with Majority Leader Harry Reid, steamed over the Connecticut independent's high-profile support of John McCain for president.

Reid, in a sternly worded statement after the 45-minute meeting, said no official decisions have been made. But an aide to the Nevada Democrat said Reid was leaning toward removing Lieberman as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were confidential.

"While I understand that Sen. Lieberman has voted with Democrats a majority of the time, his comments and actions have raised serious concerns among many in our caucus," Reid said.

Lieberman was Democrat Al Gore's vice presidential running mate eight years ago. He switched to an independent after he failed to win the Democratic Senate primary in Connecticut in 2006. Lieberman won the general election as an independent but is still registered as a Democrat.

Connecticut Democrats are scheduled to meet on Dec. 17 to decide whether the state party should censure Lieberman.

"It will come up but I'm certainly waiting to see what's going to be happening in the Senate and I'm certainly using that as a barometer," said Nancy DiNardo, the party's state chairwoman.

Although he aligns himself with Senate Democrats, Lieberman angered many Democrats for when he used a prime-time speech at the Republican convention this summer to criticize Barack Obama as an untested candidate beholden to Democratic interest groups. Republican McCain had considered making Lieberman, a longtime friend, his running mate this year before settling on Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Bouncing Lieberman from his committee post would require the approval of the Democratic caucus, which is expected to meet this month.

"I want to spend some time in the next few days thinking about what Sen. Reid and I discussed what my options are at this point," Lieberman said. "He promised me that he would do the same and we would continue these conversations."

Republicans have said they would welcome Lieberman to their caucus.

Democrats in the past had tolerated Lieberman's political straddling because he held their slim 51-49 majority in his hands. Now that Democrats have strengthened their hold in the Senate to at least 55 seats as a result of Tuesday's election, Lieberman no longer is vital to their majority control.

Despite splitting with most Democrats on the war in Iraq, Lieberman tends to vote with them on domestic issues such as health care, education and the environmen

Well, the fact that they didn't get to number they wanted, they may need Joe, suh a little compromise may have to be reached. The people of CT need to duh the right thing next time Joe is on the ballot.

they don't need him. Him fi go. Why keep a backbiter like that. At least Zel Miller had retired from politics when he blasted Kerry and the democrats.

It is not even that he gave a speach but the fact that he was hovering for a post in the McCain adminsitration and was used as an attack dog even saying worst thing than the republicans themselves.

Everybody is aware of what Joe did. People cannot let their emotions lead them.

I agree the right thing to do is to take away his Chairmanship positions. It is not right for someone to campaign so forcefully against the candidate who won (including considering the VP position) and still not face any political loss.

It is a little tricky because if they have him and Hagel voting with them they will have a much easier time getting things done without any resistance from Republicans, and Washingston is all about cutting deals. I suspect in this case they will have to strip him though, he ****************ed fof too many people.

The ting is, it not like he was a lighten rod before. He went out of his way to do what he did. He could have supported McCain but not come out so forceful against Borack.

It would be an embarrasment to the voting public accross America if he stays just to garner a few votes. You can't be playing boaty all the time. He thinks that the soldiers should stay in Iraq, He thinks we should attack Iran, and he his foriegn policies is no different that that of Bush and McCain so why is he still going to lead these committees when we all know the way how things are approached will be different under Borack.

Is not like he has acknowlegded any of his wrongs.

On domestic policy he is still pretty much with the Dems though.

Maybe them will strip him of everything except the committee that deal with wildlife protection. Mek him concentrate pon saving the polar bears. LOL.

                        LIEBERMAN OVERTURES FROM GOP?

                        From NBC's Ken Strickland
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Independent Senator Joe Lieberman have been talking, according to McConnell's spokesman. While the spokesman couldn't give details of the conversation, McConnell and other Senate Republican leaders have previously said they'd welcome Lieberman into their caucus.
An aide to Lieberman also confirmed the conversation with McConnell.
