Colour code legal taxis – Waite
Monday, 03 November 2008
Opposition Spokesman on Education Senator Basil Waite has called on the Government to immediately implement measures to stem the wave of criminal attacks on women and children.
In a statement on Sunday, Senator Waite said the Government must urgently revisit and overhaul the current transportation policies for school children.
He also called for the formalisation of all taxi operations to ensure that taxis are not only registered, but colour-coded to facilitate immediate recognition of legal taxi operators.
According to Senator Waite, this measure will allow Jamaicans to feel secure as they go about their daily lives.
"It is clear from the recent wave of criminality that our school children are being targeted, especially our young women, and the fear currently being felt is palpable from conversations that I've had with mothers, parents and students across the country ... it's unprecedented, in the lives of young women," he said.
Mr. Waite is contending that this has amounted to some amount of confusion and uncertainty as many promising young persons continue to be victims of crime and violence.
"The People's National Party is deeply concerned about these attacks, particularly on our children," he added.
