True, which is a very inefficient way to have to treat the uninsured. Better to have a system of some sort which can be tracked.

Actually on the issue of taxes, the taxes would be much higher than that, and social security & medicare tax is usually off people's radar. The rate for employees and employers is 7.6%, and for self-employed persons it is 15.3%.
Also social security & medicare tax is not imposed on wages over $102,000, which benefits the wealthy. If someone makes $200,000 in a year, they only have this tax withheld on the first $102,000 of their wages.Winning means you're willing to go longer, work harder, and give more than anyone else - Vince Lombardi

Well, you are partially right. There is a limit on the SS wages but there is no limit on the medicare wages.
