Minister of National Security Colonel Trevor MacMillan says the Jamaica Constabulary Force is currently losing more members than it is recruiting each year.

st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) }According to the Security Minister as many as 350 members leave the JCF each year while as few as two hundred new recruits are being trained annually.

As a consequence the force is now 3800 below the 12,000 members needed.

The Security Minister says this is creating a serious constraint on the capacity of the police to carry out their job

    efficiently and effectively.

"If we had those 3800 policemen now their presence right across the island would make an impact on what's happening, in particular in the robberies etc," he said.

The Ministry of National Security estimates that it will cost about one billion dollars to fully restore the Police Academy at Twickenham Park in St. Catherine to increase the intake of trainees.

Permanent Secretary, Gilbert Scott, says 400 million has been allocated in this year's budget.

The security officials were speaking Tuesday during a meeting with the editorial team of the RJR Group.
