Parliament will be asked to pass legislation shortly to facilitate better coordination of security at the country's ports.
The bill will authorise the Ministry of National Security to play a more central role in safeguarding the nation against the entry of contraband, including illegal firearms.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Gilbert Scott, says too many agencies are engaged in security at the ports at the moment, which makes central coordination difficult.
He says the new law should correct that problem.
"What that will do is then establish the standards, the criteria for things like employment, monitoring, vetting. It wouldn't actually provide security but it would establish the framework for the security requirements for the port," he said.
Despite the installation of sophisticated x-ray equipment at the major ports the National Security Ministry has acknowledged that illegal firearms are still being brought into the country through these points of entry.
