  • Custom worker arrested

An employee of the Jamaica Customs Department is to appear in court today after being arrested and charged under the Corruption Prevention Act.

Andre Williams was arrested on Friday, following an investigation into the importation of a 2006 Suzuki Swift.

It is alleged that between July 17 and August 7, 2008, he knowingly used an incorrect invoice to secure the clearance of the vehicle.

Mr. Williams allegedly also used his status as an employee of Customs to manipulate the system.

His case will be heard in the Half Way Tree criminal court.

Since being appointed Commissioner of Customs in May, Danville Walker has committed himself to continue the drive to rid the department of corruption, especially fraud.

He said the customs department would be stepping up investigations in an effort to secure the country’s revenue.

Mr. Walker has estimated that at least 10 percent of the $76 billion revenue target for the department is being voided by corruption.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)

Customs is an orgy of fraud and corruption. A sistren who returned to Ja last year paid $2,000US to avoid paying duties on her goods.

            All customs employees are millionaires.

That is why mi glad Danville is there. But to show you how bad things are, people getting vex and saying "a fight him a fight we" when Danville is separating employee duties to ensure no foolishness going on.
