  • Interesting read...

On their most watched cable news network CNN it is being reported that
members of the US Congress were threatened with martial law and further
stated that nearly all of America’s elite political class have been
buying up books on post World War I Germany’s Weimar Republic which they state the United States is soon to resemble with interest rates hitting astronomical highs as the US dollar totally collapses.

Top American writer Naomi Wolf has warned her fellow citizens: “Because
Americans like me were born in freedom, we have a hard time even
considering that it is possible for us to become as unfree -
domestically - as many other nations. Because we no longer learn much
about our rights or our system of government - the task of being aware
of the constitution has been outsourced from citizens' ownership to
being the domain of professionals such as lawyers and professors - we
scarcely recognise the checks and balances that the founders put in
place, even as they are being systematically dismantled. Because we
don't learn much about European history, the setting up of a department
of "homeland" security - remember who else was keen on the word
"homeland" - didn't raise the alarm bells it might have.”

But, to the full consequences of their coming breakup the American
people are facing Ms Wolf has issued her most dire warning yet in
stating that for the first time since their Civil War US Combat Troops
are ready to take to the streets throughout the United States to
eliminate any, and all, dissention against them.

Thinking about it, I can’t help reflecting that oftentimes, the greatest danger that a country faces is found within its borders, and amongst its own citizens. Jamaica is a remarkable example of this, but I would be amiss if I failed to recognize that fringe writers such as this Naomi Wolf (described as a “top American writer”) are so obsessed with their particular political stance that they cannot recognize necessary things!

How can a genuinely objective American not realize that the decision to establish Homeland Security, despite its major shortcomings, was a necessary move? It was, when all is said and done, a necessary and timely reaction to clear and present external dangers!

Of course, she is correct in her view that because Americans “were born in freedom, we have a hard time considering that it is possible for us to become as unfree as many other nations.” Nevertheless, how accurate is she when she writes that the checks and balances “are being systematically dismantled”?

Also, how accurate is it to state that “for the first time since their Civil War US combat troops are ready to take to the streets throughout the United States to eliminate any, and all, dissention against them”? Sounds like someone is guessing here, but nonetheless, such dramatic guesswork will find acceptance in places.

Certainly the American government – like all governments on the planet – will be forced to take some sort of defensive action should there be major civil unrest. (We saw what hesitancy did in the case of the LA riots of the early 1990s following the Rodney King court case.) Hopefully, if this happens anytime soon, it would be city police and state troopers that are called out. But if street protests get out of hand, I can see national guards being called in! It would be an extremely irresponsible government who failed to act in situations involving civil uprising!

Maybe I need to watch the video instead of merely relying on what I read above!

              Women in Islamic countries
Wolf has spoken favorably about the dress required of women living in Muslim countries. She observed
The West interprets veiling as repression of women and suppression of their sexuality. But when I travelled in Muslim countries and was invited to join a discussion in women-only settings within Muslim homes, I learned that Muslim attitudes toward women's appearance and sexuality are not rooted in repression, but in a strong sense of public versus private, of what is due to God and what is due to one's husband. It is not that Islam suppresses sexuality, but that it embodies a strongly developed sense of its appropriate channelling - toward marriage, the bonds that sustain family life, and the attachment that secures a home.

                Very accurate.

Go read the thousands of pages in the several Patriot Acts.

No one wants to read the fine prints. Unless you do, you have NO basis for argument.

Has Posse Comitatus been repealed, for example? What are the Emergency powers of Govt? Do you trust Bush with them?

Seems like gross exaggeration to me. Election silly season I guess.

I did not hear CNN report that anybody was THREATENED with martial law, what I remember being said was that some members of congress were being told that if the financial crisis got out of hand and there was mass riots in the streets, martial law might be necessary to restore order. The idea of course was to get them to vote for the bailout or feel responsible for what happened if they didn't.

This is where politics really gets really silly. One one side you have the left wing nuts saying that all personal freedoms will be lost if McCain and the repugs win again, on the other side the right wing nuts saying Obama is a member of a sleeper cell or at the very least a Marxist and all personal freedoms will be lost if he wins. So I guess we will be in slavery in either case.

I expect the US to have some difficult economic times ahead (relatively speaking) but for life to remain essentially the same regardless of who wins the election. As Colin Powell said yesterday, the lines to the US embassy are still long today even with all the damage done by Bush and company.

Look how Congress surrendered to the bankers.

BTW, Colin Powell also said that there were WMDs in Iraq!

Quite fine with me...especially given that I am NOT left wing. LoL

When I was busy forecasting the outcome/consequence of a profligate war, a credit bubble and general excessiveness from way back as far as 2002 on this very site, was I a nut then too? I guess it must have seemed nutty to be telling people to buy gold at $275 back then, huh?

Group think is not my speed and I dont need to be follow the herd. I really dont give a damn how I am coming across, actually. Who dont like my posts, just give them a wide berth.
