    Taskforce recommends sex offender registry

    Posted: 2008-10-14 13:21:39

The taskforce established to examine increasing incidents of violence against children is reportedly in favour of establishing a sex offenders’ registry.

The registry is proposed in the Sexual Offences bill as a means of monitoring sex offenders.

The Gleaner/ Power 106 news has learnt that one of the recommendations the taskforce plans to make is that Parliament immediately debate the proposed Sexual Offences bill.

This proposed legislation fell off the order paper when Parliament was dissolved in 2007 for general elections.

The taskforce will also recommend to Prime Minister Bruce Golding that the ‘Ananda Alert’, a response roadmap for missing children, be taken onboard.

Government was moved into action following a wave of attacks in recent weeks against children.

Mr Golding assembled the taskforce with instructions to review the institutional arrangements to care and protect children.

Police statistics suggest that approximately 56 children have been murdered since the start of the year.
