    Our changing classrooms
    Wesley Barrett

Our school classroom environment has changed significantly over the last 10 years but more dramatically over the last two years. Few people would have envisaged the level of indiscipline and daring acts by some schoolchildren and their parents. We are stunned by the ferocity of the acts of indiscipline perpetrated by individual students and some gangs. In utter amazement many people have to be asking, "When did we get here?" However, it will not be enough to express shock and disbelief. As a society it is imperative that we find a sustainable solution to the problem in the shortest possible time so that the words of some will not come true when they say, "You ain't seen nothing yet." The thought is frightening.

If we reflect for a moment we may recall the time not so long ago when the school and its precincts were regarded as almost sacred.

It's over. The Beijing Olympics have come and gone. And with it wonderful memories of our greatest athletic triumph and a signal to the world, especially small nations, of what can be achieved when hearts, minds, and bodies work in unison combined with a fixity of purpose.

Some of our athletes will be coming home this week, and quite rightly we should greet them, not only with open arms, but with thankful recognition of the hard work and sacrifices they made on behalf of Jamaica.

While the Government contemplates how the athletes will be honoured and what a grateful nation will bestow on them for their extraordinary exploits on and off the track in Beijing, we must also find a way to translate the positive energy now pervading the island into something tangible for our athletes and for all Jamaicans aspiring for greatness.
