JTA to give Gov't August 27 ultimatum
    Carl Gilchrist
    Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Ocho RIOS, St Ann - Delegates attending the 44th annual conference of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) at the Sunset Jamaica Grande here are expected to pass a resolution today giving the Government until midnight next Wednesday to settle the salary reclassification issue, or face industrial action when schools reopen next month.

The resolution, drafted by Albert Thomas of Clarendon during the presentation of the Salaries and Conditions of Service report yesterday afternoon, received widespread support from delegates on the floor. However, a tight schedule prevented its re-drafting and passing "until the next appropriate session", despite an extension of the session by the maximum allowable 30 minutes.

New JTA president Doran Dixon told the conference that the awards ceremony set for 8:00 last night was not appropriate. It therefore means the resolution, in a modified form, should be presented on today's final day of the three-day conference which will also see a presentation by Education Minister Andrew Holness.

The proposal, which was seconded by Ann Marie White, stated that the teachers were ready to take the appropriate actions to push forward their claims if Government did not hand over the final realignment document - which looked at bringing the teacher's salaries within 80 per cent of comparable positions in the private sector - by midnight next Wednesday.

"We call on the Government to immediately deal with the important case of reclassification; without that, it's trouble," warned past-president Paul Adams.
