A Jamaican restaurant, called The Irie Palace, recently opened in my neighborhood. Yes, the owners are Jamaican.
On the wall is a beautiful, brightly-colored mural of a "typical Jamaican marketplace"- street vendors, push carts, a bus witha personon the outside hanging on to one of the passengers through the window. There wasanattractive, "modern woman", smiling and holding a cell phone.
The owner did not know my knowledge of Jamaica. She said that was a "typical Jamaican marketplace."
I decided to spring the punch line.
"See that woman in the red dress, holding the cell phone?", I said. "She must be with Digicel."
The manager looked shocked that I knew. "Why is that" she said.
"She's with Digicel because she is smiling. If she were with Cable and Wireless, she would be very, very angry."
Jerk chicken dinner, rice and peas, and fried plantains - $10
