Minister of Finance Audley Shaw is proposing that commercial banks extend their opening days to Saturdays.
Mr. Shaw said the time has come for banks to make changes to the way they operate including adding an extra day to the banking week.
He said the proposal should be seriously considered in keeping with the changing needs of bank customers.
"I don't see where there's any law which stops them from opening, say, in Portmore on a Saturday. I think the banks should look at what we're doing at the revenue departments where we have established opening hours on a Saturday to facilitate the living and working patterns of the people of Portmore ... it's a statement of respect that we are paying to the residents in the community," said Mr. Shaw.
