            The Problem with JFJ

            Golding's 'powder puff' measures?
            published: Sunday | July 27, 2008

            Ian Boyne

One newspaper headline bellowed the word 'Tough' to describe the set of crime-fighting measures which the prime minister announced last Tuesday, but some see them as soft and merely a capitulation to what one columnist termed "the human-rights ecartel".
But the prime minister would have learnt by now that the human-rights activists really cannot be appeased, as they are still talking tough, though they are relieved that the Government did not move to extend the detention-without-charge period to 28 or more days. They are using the 'V' sign for victory - a symbol not unfamiliar to the prime minister's party.

The problem with our human-rights lobby is that it is absolutist and fundamentalist. Its adherents are generally characterised by inflexibility and a rigidity that is intellectually stultifying and is not hospitable to robust discourse. They don't see nuances or shades of grey. Everything is black and white to them. Their mentality is essentially fundamentalist. And that constitutes a conversation-stopper.

Hence, as much as the prime minister has conceded to them, much to the consternation of others, they are still not satisfied and are still raising hell over the measures. Context means nothing to them. It's law of the Medes and the Persians for them. They are fundamentalists.
But they are powerful and have very influential friends in the media. They are the rock stars of the talk-show circuit in Jamaica. But their views must not go unchallenged.

nothing nuh wrong wid the people them.
Not everybody going to agree and they serve a very useful purpose.
Let me say even good planned measures or what seems like it must be criticise.

The JFF don't have to agree to anything as long as the politicians do their work and do it good it is fine.

We have too much dislike for opposition, opposition can be good. The last time I check JFJ never a fire nuh guns or tell nobody fi shoot anybody.

Long live people who have purpose and take on the plight of the masses and bring it to the politician doorstep.

Maybe want is need is an organization like Jamaica against badmen.

We support fi we badmen but only when hurt us we talk.

Last time them bawl forward fi Dudas, etc, mi nuh see nobody quiet. You ever hear them bawl forward fi informer?

Culture have to chance and we have to stop supporting or give gunmen the idea that they are wanted. They actually think they are doing good for the country.

How about if police kill one a your close family members, and then say it was a shootout and they found him/her nursing gunshot wounds and clutching a 9? How about that?!

You know, I am "happy" that the JFJ is being blasted under a JLP gvt. I remember when Balla dem use to say it was merely an arm of the JLP opposition and if the JLP should ever become govt. you would see how quiet they become. Of course, I disagreed.

Waiting for someone to accuse them of being an affiliate of the Patriots.

Dads, unnuh nah trod the streets fi know whatagwan. You mek news a fool unnuh. Most people u see crying pon tv bout "Jimmy a good bwoy", "Jimmy no do nuttin" a actors u hear dat. Mi witness that myriads of times. Me did know one a the yutes inna Braeton 7. Dat yute was a real shotta. Think he was the youngest of the lot. It's not innocent people dying u better know dat. Man dem fi dead, u think dem a check when them a kill women and kids.

If one a mi cousins a gunman and dem kill him then so be it. Even if dem catch him off guard, without him weapon, and jus pop him and plant gun pon him. Worst if killing woman and children a part of him modus operandi. Mi kill him miself.
