Charges remain-DPP
Thursday, 31 July 2008
There is a new development in the criminal case against former Junior Minister for Energy Kern Spencer and his two co-accused Rodney Chin and Coleen Wright in the Cuban Light Bulb Scandal.
The three appeared in the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Court Thursday on several counts of conspiracy to defraud, money laundering and breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.
The Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewelyn told the proceedings that she will proceed on the Money Laundering and Corruption charges against Mr. Spencer and the other two.
The DPP made it clear that she has not dropped any charges against Mr. Spencer and the conspiracy charge is still on the table.
Thursday's development comes days after supporters of the St Elizabeth MP accused the authorities of withholding information they claim can exonerate him.
The constituents in North East St Elizabeth had called on Energy Minister Clive Mullings to submit the new information to the DPP.
Defence attorneys welcome Thursday's decision and maintained that they are ready for trial.
The attorneys argued that the fact that prosecutors were proceeding on the lesser charge showed that the case is weak.
Mr. Spencer, Miss. Wright and Mr.Chin were arrested and charged on February 26 in connection with the Cuban Light Bulb case.
They are scheduled to return to court on September 15.
and what of Trafigura that was so exciting to some 6 months ago?
