  • One more Penitentiary in Jamaica makes good economic sense

The location though important--will not be considered here.

I am just thinking about the job creation that a penitentiary will create.

Like factories, penitentiaries are the "life blood" of some communities.

Did i mention it could also be a crime deterrent? (A recent article posted on this forum spoke about crime prevention).

After the US shuts down Guantanemo prison fi terrorists, we should lease the facility and farm out the prison system to the Cubans.

I was being sarcastic... as you probably know.

I agree that Jamaica needs more prisons. Our incarceration rate is way below that of many regional countries with a less severe crime problem.

However I never saw expanding prisons as an economic measure. I'm aware that many communities throughout the United States see prisons in economic terms and vie to attract them.... and a so called prison industrial complex has developed in that country.
I never saw Jamaican prisons that way.

Additionally, if you were serious about prisons being crime deterrents in Jamaica... I wholeheartedly disagree.
This is a country where even police stations are hardly deterrents to crime.

It is not possible for Prisons to be a deterrent to crime in Jamaica ??

                          Interesting dilema...

Prison Labour is an excellent economic strategy..

                          It worked during Slavery....

What about Jamaica prohibits that strategy ?

Excellent opportunity to mop up dormant human resource.. all we need now is appropriate legislation to incarcerate on a massive scale..

                            hmmmmm...

Good last paragraph Don1. I'll agree with you on this.

Job creation does not have to be 'sexy'.

I read where men are charging people who live in a village--money to use the local river. This is because of lack of employment.

I believe that Jamaica does not have the luxury of cherry-pickin' what systems of employment creation is ideal.
