you actually believe that prison labor is a good economic strategy and it "worked during slavery"? who did it work for... apart from the plantation owners and their agents?

what's "good" about using prisons as an economic engine?

I think prisoners can be put to work for remedial/rehabilitative purposes... but as an economic strategy?... my vote is no.
Would you include prison labor in the national accounts and plan for its growth?

no...the fact that prisons will provide ONE TYPE of employment for a community.

It's economic impact will be merely trickle down....

      SIDEBAR:

When i become prime minister of jamaica (wid my dual citizenship and all), i'll take the penetentiary bizniz to the next level you are talking about.

Jamaica has an an unlimited resource of raw material in free labor called criminals.

Don1...you could set-up a bakery close to the prison. You could employ several locals...and supply the prison wid bread.

The prisoners would also do their part by earning their keep. Chussss mi!!
The only time TRUTH will hurt you...is if you ignore it long enough
