MURDERS went up by 13 per cent in June this year, when compared to the same period in 2007, but was a 33 per cent drop over May this year when 202 murders were recorded on police blotters.
According to police statistics released yesterday, 136 murders were recorded in June, pushing the murder toll for the year to 833.
Seventy-four per cent or 100 persons of the people murdered in June, were killed with the gun. Ninety-three per cent of the persons killed were male, while five women and five children were among the murdered.
The troubled St Catherine North Police Division, which includes Spanish Town and its environs, experienced the highest murder toll last month with 31 murders, while 20 persons were killed in the St Andrew South Police Division, which includes several volatile communities where there has been an outbreak of gang violence.
Police also reported that they fatally shot 21 persons, injured another 23, while two others were killed by a security guard and licensed firearm holder last month.
A total of 48 illegal firearms and 421 rounds of ammunition were taken off the streets last month, the police said.
