  • Notorious West Indian New Yorkers

Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson was a South Carolinian. He was recently made
famous as the subject of the movie "Hoodlum" In it he is portrayed as
guardian and then owner of the bank first headed by Stephanie St Clair.

St Clair resisted the takeover of the bank by Dutch Schultz born Arthur
Fleigenheimer. The war seems to have been between Tamany Hall factions
as both the traditional "black and latino" group and Schultz had
political supporters. The Schultz group was supported by Hynes. In the
end Schultz was assasinated and Bumpy Johnson started paying in to the
    Luciano later Genovese Mafia family.

The format for the game was developed by St. Croix native Casper
Holstein who is portrayed in "The Cotton Club" refusing to hire Bumpy
and engage in violence. The same actor Fishburne played Bumpy in both
films. Holstein an ex Wall Street messenger and also a horse bookie was
probably the most politically sophisticated and business like of the
operators. He was a major financial supporter of Arthur Schomburg and
    Marcus Garvey.

Holstein left to concentrate on a lobbying career American Virgin
    Islands Civic Assoc..
which fought for local self government. Even while running the numbers
he had an office in Washington which was staffed by a white Dane Halvor
Berg. He spent a year in jail the late 30s well after he had dropped out
of even his lay off operations. When Schultz took over most NYC numbers
he found that Holstein was almost indespensable, he fixed the game to do
    so.
