The People's National Party has endorsed the decision of the Contractor General to investigate the awarding of contracts at the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC).
A newspaper report over the weekend claimed the contracts were awarded by the state-run bus company under the watch of the late Chairman Douglas Chambers.
In a statement released Tuesday afternoon the PNP said its executive decided at a meeting on Monday to ask Contractor General Greg Christie to expand his investigations into the contracts awards process.
The party says it has information that the award and a number of other contracts did not conform to the Contractor General's Act.
The party has asked the Contractor General to include these contracts in his probe.
The PNP is asking Mr. Christie to consider methodology by which the award of concessions at the Half Way Tree Transport Centre was effected, the contract between the JUTC and a private company to supply fuel to the bus company which is reported to have been at a price higher than could have been obtained at Petrojam, a fully owned sister government company, and that the Contractor General investigate all contracts awarded by the JUTC since October 2007 for bushing and security primarily in the volatile Spanish Town area.
The PNP says the probe is necessary in the interest of transparency and accountability and in light of the urgency of the situation following the shooting death of its chairman Douglas Chambers.
The PNP has also called on the Contractor General to expedite his investigation into the contracts.
