Where’s the employee representative on new Air J Board - Unions
The two unions representing Air Jamaica workers are upset that an employee representative was not included on the new Board.
Although Air Jamaica pilot Omar Parkins has been asked to serve on the nine-member Board, the unions said this is not enough.
The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) contends that the previous Board had Noel Hylton and two other Directors who regularly interfaced with workers.
President-General of the BITU Kavon Gayle is calling for an additional Director to be appointed who will be responsible for employee relations.
"I am yet to see the person on this Board that can demonstrate that role in terms of interfacing with the staff, employees and the unions.
Whilst it's not a prerequisite, it is very essential because the staff is going to play a very fundamental role in the transition of Air Jamaica," he said.
Vice-President of the National Workers Union Granville Valentine said an employee representative on the Board is critical to efforts to stabilize the airline before its divestment.
"We believe that if you have that good balance along with the participation of workers then we should be starting out on the right footing," he said.
