DOHA • A criminal court here yesterday sentenced two Nepalese men and two Indonesian women, all of them in their early twenties, to a year in prison for having illicit relations.
One of the convicted women delivered a child while in custody and she actually walked into the courtroom with the baby in her arms escorted by a policewoman. The child is three months old, it was learnt.
The foursome is to be deported after serving their jail terms. However, since they have already been in the prison for the past 11 months or so, they are to be sent home in a month, legal sources told The Peninsula yesterday.
The Nepalese were in lowly-paid jobs while the women worked as maids. Their case was being heard by the criminal court headed by Judge Abdullah Al Omer.
In another case, six young Iranian citizens charged with molesting a 20-year-old Filipina were acquitted by the court.
The incident had taken place on August 3 this year at Al Wakra beach where the plaintiff was swimming along with her boyfriend. She had told the court earlier that while she was at the beach, the six men approached and molested her.
"When my boyfriend tried to intervene and stop them, they assaulted him," she had said. The court, however, found the six defendants not guilty. Five of them were present in the court yesterday.
Their lawyer, Saeeda Kash later told The Peninsula that the court acquitted the Iranians because the statements given by the complainant to the police, prosecution and the court were contradictory.
Meanwhile, another criminal court headed by Judge Abdul Atti Assad sentenced a young Sri Lankan to a year of suspended imprisonment and ordered him to be deported after he was found guilty of having illicit relations with a maid. The court ordered the woman to be deported with immediate effect.
