  • Gov’t promises faster trials

The government is promising speedier trials for cases involving serious criminal offences.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has sought to assure Parliament that steps are being taken to make this promise a reality soon.

"We've had consultation with the judiciary and with the prosecutorial authorities on ways to fasttrack violent crime cases," said Mr. Golding.

He says additional prosecutors and court staff are being appointed to facilitate the new thrust.

However, the prime minister has one lingering concern that many cases are not being properly prepared by the police and prosecutors before they are brought to court.

Steps are therefore being taken to improve this aspect of the judicial process as well.
