Gov’t defends appointment of SDC Director

The Government is defending its decision to appoint former banking executive Sonia Christie as Executive Director of the Social Development Commission (SDC).
Mrs. Christie is a co-defendant in a lawsuit in which it is alleged that she leaked confidential banking information to the Jamaica Labour Party during the Trafigura Scandal.
The Opposition had tabled questions in Parliament regarding whether Mrs. Christie was qualified to serve as Executive Director of the SDC and if the job was advertised.
Responding in Parliament on Tuesday Information Minister Olivia "Babsy" Grange said Mrs. Christie was appointed based on her management experience in the banking sector and her contribution to social projects.
After being chided for not advertising the post, Miss Grange said the administration was not opposed to doing so in the future.
She confirmed that Mrs. Christie is a co-defendant in a case in which she is accused of leaking information to unauthorized third parties.
Miss Grange told Parliament that the case has not yet been heard.
