  • JUTC to forge ahead with staff cuts

    Tuesday, 17 June 2008
It appears that the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) will be going ahead with plans to lay off more than 200 workers despite some resistance from trade unions.

Transport Minister Mike Henry is to chair a meeting on Tuesday morning to discuss the dispute surrounding the proposed staff cuts.
He hinted on Monday night that the lay-offs will still take place.
Last week, the University and Allied Workers Union asked the management of the bus company to put plans to lay off 236 workers on hold.
The company reportedly rejected the request.
Workers who went on strike earlier this month to protest against the proposed cuts resumed duties after the decision was made to hold talks on the matter.

They have questioned the rationale for the lay-offs in the wake of plans by the company to hire 400 new workers.
