By converting the issue of a serious breach of development orders by the RIU Group into a crusade against RIU and Spanish investors generally, Butch Stewart along with a complicit and pliant Bruce Golding has subverted and damaged one of the main sources of investment in Jamaica's tourism.... completely unnecessarily and for selfish reasons of corporate protectionism.
Yes the Observer broke a legitimate and important story... the building breach. After that commendable exposure of apparent wrongdoing .. the extraordinary and outsized campaign of bashing the Spanish using his personal toy the Observer (AKA The Sandals Newsletter or The Beechwood Prostitute or The Daily Tampon) was an obvious and odious attempt at cutting his new competitors down to size.... efforts some here see as "normal" and "acceptable" because "he owns the newspaper"... you guys need to get out more and discover the true role of media.
Golding's role in this issue highlights an issue I have raised here in the past regarding the corrupting influence of the cabal of big businessmen wielding power in Jamaica.. especially given the narrow ownership of public media.
Stewart has Golding by the balls on this issue.... being a chief financier and architect of his electoral victory..... grab 'em by the balls and their hearts and minds will surely follow.
I wrote yesterday of Golding being "in charge".... that is definitely the case within his party but there are some locals who seem to have a ring through his nose.
Golding injected himself into the issue loudly, clumsily and unnecessarily... all to appease his champion Butch.
He should have - behind the scenes urged the developer to correct the breaches and left the public posturing to The Daily Tampon and the details to the parish council or responsible minister.
I have warned about the corrupting influence of big business and unprofessional media... some scoffed because they see Stewart as some kind of corporate God..... now the chickens are coming home to roost because the Piper has been well paid and knows what tune to play.
