  • Development process much improved

    Wednesday, 14 May 2008

The Government is reporting that it has achieved its target of fast tracking the development approval process.
State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Daryl Vaz Tuesday told Parliament that 954 applications were submitted for approval between February and April and 527 were approved.

Mr. Vaz said this represents a 71% increase in approvals when compared to the corresponding period last year.
He also had good news from the National Environmental and Planning Agency (NEPA) which has managed to reduce its backlog of applications.
"As a result of deliberate and targeted actions on the part of the new government there's marked improvement on the number of applications processed and significant improvement made in clearing the backlog."
Mr. Vaz said the combination of the Town and Country Planning Authority and the National Resources Conservation Authority into one board has resulted in greater efficiencies.

Shortly after he assumed office last year, Prime Minister Bruce Golding promised that systems would have been put in place for development applications to be approved within 90 days.
