  • Instruct Students in Language They Understand - Rev. Clarke

Bishop of the Moravian Church, Rev. Stanley Clarke, has said that to be effective educators, teachers must instruct students in language they can easily understand.
"In building a culture of learning, bring the message to them in a language they understand and can relate to," Rev. Clarke stated as he addressed an Education Week church service held recently at the New Beulah Moravian Church in Manchester.

"Remember", he further advised, "language is significant and critical. Language points out one's identity. Personal identity is formed within the context of community," he noted further.
With reference to the culture of violence, which has permeated the schools and the wider society, Rev. Clarke implored, educators to ensure that the moral component of lessons be explicitly stated and imparted.
"Through education, we need to create a kinder, nicer, gentler, more decent society. This is the learning environment which education reform requires," he stated.

He reminded the parents present that they too have a critical part to play in helping to renew the values of yesteryear, "so we can, together, create a society we will all be happy to live in".
In her remarks, President of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA), Ena Barclay, stated that in order to bring about a reform in the education system, people need to adopt learning as a way of life.
"As a country, we have to develop the will to ensure that resources are available so students can learn and think on their own and be successful," she said.

Education Week is an annual initiative of the JTA and was observed from May 4 to 10 under the theme: 'Building a Culture of Learning in Schools: Enabling Independent, Enthusiastic and Successful Learners'.
Activities to mark the occasion included 'Read Across Jamaica Day', where individuals including the Minister of Education, Andrew Holness, visited schools and read for groups of students; a courtesy call on the Minister by delegates of the JTA; the Helen Stills Professional Development Day at the Rose Hall Resort & Country Club; while Kingston Bookshop staged luncheons for teachers across the island.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)

What is he saying? Is this a call for instructions to be done in Jamaican patois? Is he suggesting that the english language is not easily understood by the students?
