THOMAS... could not be reached for comment
Chairman of the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), Dr Omer Thomas, resigned with immediate effect yesterday amid allegations that his academic credentials were questionable.

"He tendered his resignation and we have accepted it," Agriculture Minister Christopher Tufton told the Observer last night.

Tufton said that he would announce Thomas' successor next week.

He, however, declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding Thomas' resignation except that there was speculation surrounding his credentials that were "distracting to the ministry".

"We had a discussion and we accepted the resignation," was all Tufton would reveal.
Efforts to contact Thomas last night were unsuccessful.

Thomas, a former head of the Jamaica Bureau of Standards and defeated Jamaica Labour Party candidate for the East Portland constituency in last September's general elections, was appointed chairman of RADA in January.

According to a RADA profile, Thomas is a graduate of the Jamaica School of Agriculture and holds a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science, as well as a Masters and PhD in Pathology and Virology.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
