The People's National Party (PNP) is still uncomfortable with the increases in National Housing Trust (NHT) mortgage rates.
At the regular National Executive Council meeting in Manchester on Sunday, party leader Portia Simpson Miller lambasted the Bruce Golding administration for taking what the PNP is calling the unnecessary step of increasing mortgage rates under the pretence of insolvency.
Speaking with the RJR News Centre after the meeting PNP Deputy General Secretary Julian Robinson also poured cold water on the government's assertions that the NHT is at risk.
The increase in the NHT mortgage rate is just going to put an extra burden on mortgagers of the NHT and push middle income earners into a state of poverty," said Mr. Robinson.
"When we left the NHT the financial statements showed that the NHT is still in a healthy position financially. The government has presented a picture of the NHT being almost bankrupt and having to institute these things to save it and we disagree with that assessment," he said.
