  • High levels of absenteeism at JUTC cause for concern

The Ministry of Transport is drawing attention the high levels of absenteeism among workers at the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC). A recent internal report at the state-owned bus company shows that 1,022 drivers and conductors failed to turn up for work in January and February alone.

The Ministry in a statement said over the same period, 2,351 sick days were recorded between the two categories of workers, making a total of 3,373 lost production days.

At the individual worker level, up to 45 days of the 60-day period was recorded as lost due to workers calling in sick.

Reported illness among individual drivers resulted in up to 23 production days being lost.

Communications Director at the Ministry of Transport, Reginald Allen, says the JUTC's management suspects this high level of absenteeism may be a deliberate attempt at sabotage.

JUTC's executive chairman, Douglas Chambers, has been mandated to identify speedy solutions to the problem.
