No early general elections for 2008
The administration has given the clearest indication yet that it will not be calling an early general election this year.
National Security Minister Derrick Smith indicated that no election is being considered.
He was responding to a query from Opposition Member Dr. D.K. Duncan during a sitting of Parliament's Standing Finance Committee on Tuesday.
Mr. Smith, who has portfolio responsibility for the Electoral Commission of Jamaica was asked whether the subvention made for the entity was sufficient to cover any contingency such as a general election.
"You know member last year we had two national elections and we are not anticipating any national elections this year," said Mr. Smith.
"Could this cover by-elections?" asked Dr. Duncan.
"If you are suggesting about a possible by-election, I don't know if you are talking about North East St. Elizabeth," Mr. Smith responded in a glib reference to the constituency of embattled MP, Kern Spencer.
