Former Minister walks out of parliament after intense teasing

      Wednesday, 02 April 2008

A fuming Roger Clarke Tuesday walked out of Parliament's Standing Finance Committee in the midst of intense heckling from Government members.

The Opposition spokesman on Agriculture marched out in the midst of a spat which developed after he sought to defend the previous administration's efforts to address praedial larceny.
The committee members had spent hours poring over the estimates for the Agriculture Ministry when the quarrel broke out.

At the centre of the melee was the controversial receipt book system the previous administration introduced as part of efforts to stem praedial larceny.
With just 5,000 of the over 100,000 books printed actually being given to the farmers they were meant to protect, Agriculture Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton branded the system a failure.
However, that assessment was not what irked Roger Clarke.
Instead it was the heckling which ensued as he attempted to explain why the system had failed.

Mr. Clarke insisted that the farmers refused to register with the ministry and receive the receipt books, however his ire was drawn when mocking government members accused him of being dishonest.
As the Speaker of the House struggled to calm tempers, Roger Clarke packed up his things and marched out of the chamber.
Opposition members appeared hesitant whether to follow suit but as Derrick Kellier made clear they were no less angry.

Mr. Kellier demanded in a fiery tone that the statement be withdrawn.
Meanwhile, leader of Opposition Business, Dr. Peter Phillips took a more conciliatory stance.
"The Opposition is not prepared to participate in the Standing Finance Committee in the way in which people were asking questions as is their right, or are going to be abused or pilloried or have motive assigned, we are not prepared to do it," said Dr. Phillips.

The Speaker of the House, Delroy Chuck, finally managed to intervene.
"Those of you who have been imputing motives, it is wrong and it is unparliamentary but I apologize for not stopping it and asking members to withdraw the comments," said Mr. Chuck.
With calm restored members completed their examination of the Agriculture Ministry's subventions.....but without Roger Clarke.
The Standing Committee continues its deliberations Wednesday.

Well, listening to it on NNN's midday news, the gov't members need to apologize to the man. Such treatment should be reserved for Omar, Phillip Paulwell and Portia.

Montague, the idiot who seems incapable of not bleating out something stupid everytime he opens his mouth, was raced up by the Speaker of the House and the Prime Minister.

He is an embarrassment to any concept of good governance. If he didn't want to change course he should have just said so!

Be that as it may, elected officials in Parliament ought to know that they are elected to do the people's work, is poor people taxes paying them (rich people in Ja. don't pay taxes, or so it seem ). This walking out business is madness, stay at the meeting and tek the heat

Nonsense! Parliamentarians must first act like mature people who do indeed want "to do the people's work". This tracing that has been a horrible characteristic of the new govt. must stop!

Bruce Golding and Delroy Chuck have draped up Montague for it, as they should, but how do you stop this idiot from future virago behaviour?!
