  • More tax dodgers in court

Several business operators in Kingston will be brought before the court Monday as the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) continues its drive against tax dodgers.

In the last two weeks the department has prepared arrest warrants for over 80 persons who were issued with summonses, but failed to appear before the court.

Ten of the 80 delinquents have so far been brought before the court.

That number could rise by the end of Monday as the IRD said persons who fail to comply with the deadline of the filing requirements will be brought to book.

"We have recently upgraded our system to allow our computer systems to automatically detect persons who have failed to file their returns. Where the system finds a non-filing of return, in the first instance, a failure to file notice will be generated and mailed to these persons, giving them 14 days in which they should file these returns. If they fail to do this within this 14 day window, then they may be given an estimated assessment or they may be taken before the court," said Meris Haughton, Director of Public Relations at the Tax Administration Services Department.
