Woman says fake Englishman tricked her out of $50,000

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine - An alleged con artist who tricked a woman from the country into giving him $50,000 was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Spanish Town criminal court on Tuesday.
Raphael Killington, 78, of Lime Tree Grove, St Catherine was arrested and charged with larceny. He was ordered to give his fingerprints to the police for analysis to determine if he has a criminal record.
Allegations are that on January 21, a 52-year-old woman from St Mary went to the Jamaica National Building Society's Oxford Road, Kingston branch and withdrew $50,000.
As she left the bank Collington approached her and with an English accent, told the unsuspecting woman he recently returned from England with 3,000 pounds sterling and wanted someone to secure it for him. He said he needed $50,000 to clinch the deal, and promised to return the money the following day.
The complainant told the court that although she did not see the money, Collington showed her a bulge in his pocket saying that he was afraid to take out the money as it would be stolen from him.
The complainant said she chartered a car with Collington and two of his accomplices and went to Constant Spring where she gave him the $50,000 which she had earlier withdrawn to pay down on a motorcar she wanted to buy.
When Collington did not return she reported the matter to the police. He was arrested on March 5. Collington told the court he took the money and promised to make restitution. But he said the money was in Canada.
