  • Tax problems may force business closure - Paul Burke

People's National Party activist Paul Burke who was among several persons dragged to court earlier this week for reportedly owing the Government millions of dollars in taxes said he could be forced to close his business.

Mr. Burke is the Managing Director of the security firm Ultra Protection Limited.

In a statement issued late Thursday night Mr. Burke said if the Tax Department insisted that his company paid $40 million in interest on taxes owed, he would have no choice but to cease operations.

He said if this is the case all the necessary legal arrangements would be carried out to wind up the company.

The four page statement contained a litany of problems which left Ultra Protection in dire financial straits.

They include the failure of clients to pay, bad contracts, large bank overdrafts as well as a series of thefts and tragedies involving employees.

According to Mr. Burke, his company unlike other security firms had employed its guards instead of placing them on contracts.

He said this placed a major financial burden on the company.

The former Region Three Chairman said his company also had to make large payments due to the theft of its property and workers being injured or killed on the job.

May need to keep the business to pay up the back taxes, it is a hard pill to swallow when one tries to make the argument that paying taxes will be to the detriment of the business, it merely is a percentage of something, not an unimaginable figure. Bet you the NHT had it take though.
