The RJR News Centre has received confirmation that efforts are being made by senior officials of the People's National Party (PNP) to persuade Kern Spencer to step down as Member of Parliament (MP) for North East St. Elizabeth.
According to the constitution, once elected, an MP's seat can only be declared vacant in a handful of situations.
One such eventuality would be his being sentenced to six months or more in prison.
The party to which an MP belongs cannot by law force him to resign, but would have to rely on political pressure and moral suasion.
Our news centre was reliably informed that top ranking members of the Party are to meet with the embattled former Junior Minister sometime this week.
According to PNP insiders, officers of the Party will be using the meeting to try and convince Mr. Spencer to resign from Parliament.
The Party's executive held another marathon meeting Monday night to discuss the fall-out from the Cuban Light Bulb Project.
The three are to appear in court on March 26th to answer charges ranging from conspiracy to defraud to money laundering.
Last month Mr. Spencer applied for a leave of absence from Parliament.
His leave from the House expires on March 31st.
