Jamaica College Old Boys Association to host career symposium

    Friday, February 29, 2008

"We want to expose high school students to a range of future career options, as this can help them to start concentrating on what preparations are necessary to be successful".

This was the view of the Duane Lue-Fung, President of the Jamaica College Old Boys' Association (JCOBA) and the first recipient of the Jamaica Employers' Federation Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, as he explained the rationale behind JCOBA's staging of the inaugural R Danny Williams Career Symposium.

The symposium is named in honour of the renowned Jamaican business icon, R Danny Williams. "Mr Williams is a role model for many successful Jamaican business professionals and we are certainly proud of the fact that he is a Jamaica College old boy." said Mr. Lue-Fung.

The Career Symposium starts on the morning of March 4th at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston, with a free session for over 1000 students from high schools in the corporate area. The students will have the opportunity to hear key professionals present career options in fields such as Banking & Finance, Hospitality, Entertainment, Politics & Civil Service, IT & Telecommunications, Marketing, Engineering and Accounting. Presenters include Dr. Peter Phillips, Brian Schmidt, Chris Williams, Nicole Madden-Greig, David Chung and Anthony Dempsey.

Starting at 5 pm that afternoon the Symposium will be opened to the wider public through the staging of a forum on Entrepreneurship headed by a panel comprising Danny Williams, Peter Bunting and Aubyn Hill. "We recognize that the appeal of running your own business has grown significantly in the last decade or so.

It is important that we continue to instill this entrepreneurial spirit in our youth and help them to understand the principles and discipline required to make a business idea move from a dream to a lasting reality." stated Mr. Lue Fung. The members of the panel for the evening session will share their perspectives on starting a business, managing the challenges of the operating environment and working with employees. This session will be held at the Courtleigh Auditorium in Kingston and will accommodate 400 students and other members of the public.

The symposium is being sponsored by the National Commercial Bank (NCB) and Gore Developments Limited. Head of Group Marketing & Communications at NCB, Sheree Martin, said the company fully endorsed the idea behind the symposium. "The concept of building our country's future intellectual capacity through the development of our youth is fully aligned with NCB's goal towards building a better Jamaica. We are very pleased to be associated with this event and look forward to facilitating what is expected to be a highly successful symposium on March 4th." said Mrs Martin.
