  • Traffic changes spark protest

    Friday, 29 February 2008

Traffic on Marcus Garvey Drive in the Kingston 11 area Friday morning came to a standstill, as angry trailer drivers used their trucks to block the road to protest against traffic changes.

According to the police, about 30 trailer drivers parked their vehicles in the road in the vicinity of the Tinson Pen Aerodrome, preventing the free flow of traffic along the busy thoroughfare.

The drivers were upset about traffic changes along the road, which they claim increase the length of their journey and inconvenience them.

They argued that plans to change the location of a turn-off force them to drive several metres out of their way to get to the opposite side of the dual carriageway.

Most of the truck drivers who exited onto Marcus Garvey Drive from the wharf at Newport East said the changes are forcing them to travel all the way to Three Miles to use the right hand turn-off in the vicinity of the Denoes and Geddes plant on Spanish Town Road.

The police, who were quick on the scene, reportedly arrested one trailer driver for obstructing traffic.

The road was eventually cleared and normal traffic flow restored.
