House Speaker launches probe into leaking of Light Bulb Report

As the finger pointing continues over the leaking of the Contractor-General Report on the Cuban Light Bulb Project, Speaker of the House of Representatives Delroy Chuck has decided to conduct his own investigation.

Mr. Chuck says he is trying to determine whether there's need for a wide scale probe.

"I am just getting reports on how this report could have been leaked to the press it depends what comes out of the investigation," said Mr. Chuck.

The release of the report one week before it was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday triggered charges and counter charges in the political arena.

Members of the Parliamentary Opposition claimed persons intent on gaining political mileage released the document to the media.

While it has been ascertained that the leak did not occur at Parliament the Opposition says that body is the appropriate authority to conduct an investigation.

In the meantime, Leader of Opposition Business in the House Dr. Peter Phillips is denying that he accused the Contractor-General of leaking the report.

When the report was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, Dr. Phillips said a probe was necessary to determine the source of the leak.

However, he says contrary to newspaper reports he made no reference to the Contractor-General.

"The Speaker of the House indicated that he was concerned that the report had been leaked, that he had investigated the house staff and he had found that there was no breach from the House," said Mr. Phillips.

"The point was simply raised by myself that given that the Office of the Contractor-General is a Parliamentary Commission that he should undertake investigation to determine where it came from. No accusation was made by me," he continued.

In a statement issued Wednesday Contractor General Greg Christie pointed out that the report was sent under confidential cover to eleven people before the leak.

The list included the Energy Minister, his Permanent Secretary and the Group Managing Director of the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
