  • Police zero tolerance approach now in effect

    Wednesday, 13 February 2008

A sustained attack on lawlessness marked by an increase in the number of police personnel deployed across the island is one measure being employed by the Police Force as it clamps down on crime.

Late last month, Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin announced a two-month grace period before the force cracks the whip on all types of offences.

Among the offences Commissioner Lewin warned would no longer be ignored were the failure of motorists to wear seat-belts and motor cyclists to wear helmets.

He also warned persons who flout the Noise Abatement Act that they too would be arrested.

On Wednesday, Director of Communication for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Karl Angell told the RJR News Centre that less than a week after the grace period ended, the new thrust began.

"Since the Commissioner spoke, there has been a steady increase in the deployment of officers across the island. We want to point out that this initiative is an ongoing on and not one where, for one day you will see a mass of police men and women on the streets of Jamaica," he said.

Mr. Angel. added that the ongoing assessments would be done.

"At this time it is much too early to speak about results. Returns are coming in, the work is being done and time will be required to assess the results and ultimately the effectiveness of the initiative," said Karl Angell.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
