  • Air J workers demand revised wage package by Friday

Pressure is mounting on the management on Air Jamaica to sign off on a new wage contract for hundreds of unionised employees.

The airline has until Friday to present a wage offer to workers who are said to be restive over the slow pace of negotiations for a new contract.

Vice-President of the National Workers Union (NWU), Granville Valentine, says the issue is the chief item on the agenda of a meeting with airline executives.

According to Mr. Valentine, Air Jamaica workers have gone for more than a year without a revised wage package.

"The workers are suffering, their spending power has diminished significantly since the last time they received an increase," said Mr. Valentine.

He says the union will also demand details of the business plan to take the airline forward.

Mr. Valentine says the NWU is questioning whether the plan has been having the desired effect on the cash strapped airline.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
