...and was, for me, the first serious debate between the candidates. It was for me the first time Obama was being asked the serious questions and after his initial 'sweet answers' he was pinned by being forced to say exactly what he meant.
In some of those second follow-up explanations he should his policies/plans were not taken far enough towards 'end-game'. Example - i) His statement on handing Drivers Licenses to immigrants failed to take into account the matter of 'exposing' the immigrants to the authorities - and possible arrest and deportation. Wrecking of families' lives - (Some may remember in an earlier post many, many months ago - I had said (tongue in cheek -gamma responded with an ...I think) give them the licenses and round them up/deport them.
ii) His Universal Health Care plan is not Universal Health Care...and, I shall return to this mention another bo-bo he made in his response here, suffice it to say we need Universal Health Care! We need coverage and good health care service for all!
I will just say here that I agree with him affordability is key. Hillary's plan as explained provides that affordability....and, she once agin explained how that will be done. - Obama could not even wait until he left the stage...but, before he did leave he once again, repeated the now blatant lie that Hillary's plan did not consider persons who COULD NOT PAY...HAD NO MEANS OF PAYING FOR Universal Health Care. Repeated it with a straight face!
Now to Obama's bo-bo here. I'll start with a general statement - Obama has been consistently making statement that are patently untrue...and, he has not been so far really pressed on those statements. If he wins or is on a democratic ticket the Republicans will not allow them to go away...be hidden. The strange thing is some of the, as he is wont to say, "not factually accurate" statements are not challenged by the 'talking heads', the print media or with enough force by Hillary or team Hillary.
Finally on Health Care the argument that there are persons who do nto want Health Care, although delivered with great seriousness, is unaldulterated crap. I have not met on person in my life who would refuse the having of 'health care assistance' sitting waiting to be use, if God forbid, it is needed.
iii) On foreign policy he talks of visiting with all our enemies within his first year. No plans or thought for any contingencies. In contrast Hillary repeated SHE would not give any such undertaking...she would reach out with emisaries with clear positions on consequencies to 'our enemies presenting selves as a danger to us' and clear positions on 'helping hands' if they fall in line and see where that takes the US on the road to possible meeting with the US president...a strengthing of relationships.
Americans will now look at both positions and decide which is the better option.
iv) Iraq?
Obama has a great line - "We must be as careful to get out of the war as we were careless getting out". Yet he guarantees removing all our troops in, I think he said, 6 months after the presidential elections.
Contrast that with Hillary's position to not give an assurance of total withdrawal...but, a limited undertaking to reduce our presence 'as quickly as possible'...with assurances of where she would be on withdrawal at teh end of 12 months...and, it was Hillary in the very first debate who suggested due caution and planning to protect our citizens and those who provided aid to us and those of our citizens and allies who would be left working and or living in Iraq.
BTW - Obama is campaigning in a manner which says - There can be no Obama/Hillary ticket. He has been consistently saying Hillary is a divisive 'person'.
Aside: My personal view - Has nothing to do with Obama's position - I think any Obama/Hillary or Hillary/Obama ticket would have a very great chance of losing to the Republicans. Together they would provide too much ammunition for the Republicans to chew on. Unfortunately Obama has also, in his speeches creating great 'sayings' that would make great attack adds against such a ticket. Such adds using his words would make such a ticket look like a joke!
I do not see it happening!
