  • NAJ threatens action if government promises are not kept

There could be trouble in the health sector next week.

Following an extra-ordinary meeting on Wednesday January 30th, the Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ) is demanding that all its members who have been in acting positions for extended periods be appointed to the posts.

The NAJ has given the Ministry of Health five days to respond to their demand.

President of the Association, Edith Allwood-Anderson said normality cannot be guaranteed if no action is taken.

"The nurses have said that come next week Wednesday, they would not be able to guarantee normalcy in terms of their duties, if the government does not seek to have these things addressed. This was a promise," she said.

Mrs. Allwood-Anderson added that nurses are in limbo over the status of their Government-financed health scheme.

She said, "The government has taken no position on the concern, except to say that they wanted to go to re-tender and we have said we are not interested in that. However, we are now proposing that the government seek to have some stability in the scheme."
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
