  • Golf Tourism in Jamaica: J$14 Billion Per Year

Golf tourism brought J$14 billion into the Jamaican economy, according to an article written in the GLEANER by Gordon Hutchinson, president of the Jamaica Golf Association.

This happens while Jamaica does not promote itself as a golf destination, writes Hutchinson.

He says other Caribbean islands, with newly-built courses, such as St. Lucia, are aggressively seeking the golfing tourists.

Hutchinson also covers the value of sports tourism. He said that one million people watched the start of the Tour De France in London, bringing an additional 120 million pounds to London's economy.

Long ago, maybe in the '70s they used to have a Johnnie Walker Golf Tournament at the Tryall Golf Club just outside Montego Bay. I do not think they have it anymore (shows how long I have been outside of the country).
Yes, sports tourism, casinos etc are things we need to consider. we cannot sit idly by why others around us are agessively growing their product and we think we will be fine where we are.
