St. Elizabeth park caretaker wrongfully dismissed Tuesday, 15 January 2008 An investigation ordered by the Prime Minister into the firing of the caretaker of the St. Elizabeth Independence Park has concluded that he was wrongfully dismissed.
Michael Bennett was fired by the St. Elizabeth Parish Council in November, after he allegedly failed to open a gate at the Park during a visit by the Prime Minister.
As a result, security personnel who had gone to the Park to escort the Prime Minister, who had landed in a helicopter, had to break off the lock to gain access.
During a meeting of the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, Jamaica Labour Party members voted to dismiss Mr. Bennett on the ground that he was aware that Mr. Golding would be visiting the park.
However, a report submitted to the Prime Minister, has revealed that the Council made its decision based on inadequate information.
According to the report, there was no effective or efficient method of communicating information to Mr. Bennett.
A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said the Local Government Department had recommended that the Parish Council take immediate steps to review Mr. Bennett's case.
The Council had also been asked to submit a report to the Local Government Department on the remedial action taken.
