    Attorney General appeals Coroner’s ruling
What: The October 2007 ruling by Coroner for the Corporate Area, Resident Magistrate Patrick Murphy, ordering the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of National Security to release the findings of a Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) investigation into the 2001 fatal shooting of Mr. Maurice Allen. The coroner ordered the investigative documents be produced within 21 days from the October 5 order.
The landmark ruling meant that the coroner and jury would for the first time have the benefit of the army’s investigation as they attempted to get to the truth behind the circumstances of Mr. Allen’s death.

Who: The JDF has not produced the documents. The Attorney General is seeking leave to appeal the ruling in a higher court. This action falls outside of the prescribed timeframe for appeals of this nature.

    When: Monday, January 14, 2008 (10:00 a.m.)

Where: Sutton Street Resident Magistrate’s Court.

Background: Morris Allen was fatally shot by security force members during an incident that involved both the Jamaican Constabulary Force (JCF) and the JDF. Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) Counsel, representing the family of Morris Allen, had contended that the soldiers’ statements and information derived from the JDF investigation were crucial if the coroner were to conduct a full and sufficient inquiry into Allen’s death. Three soldiers were dismissed in connection with the shooting.
